Both Deceased Students Revealed in the Providence Campus Attack as Authorities Persist in Search for Perpetrator.
Two students who lost their lives in the weekend's violent attack on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their assailant persisted following the freeing by Rhode Island officials of the single suspect of interest in the case.
Tributes for Ella Cook
Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was called “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, according to the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a service on Sunday.
Cook was vice-president of Brown’s branch of the College Republicans organization, as the club stated. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also expressed words of sorrow online, remarking: “Words cannot express. Keeping in mind her loved ones and companions, particularly her mother and father.”
An International Student
The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his initial year at the Ivy League university, his family confirmed.
The victim's identification was confirmed by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. His ambitions were lofty of entering the field of neurosurgery and helping people,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a online post.
The Shooting Incident
An additional nine individuals were injured in the weekend shooting in the engineering department of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the school’s final exam period.
Law enforcement reported late Sunday that a 24-year-man detained in a raid at a Hampton Inn about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was being released.
“There is a killer at large,” declared Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.
He continued, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you need to change course and head another way, and this is precisely what occurred over the last day or so.”
Public Fear
Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “It is expected to provoke new worry for our public”.
The shooter discharged a weapon inside a classroom in the engineering building on Saturday afternoon, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a 9mm handgun, a police source reported to the Associated Press.
Law enforcement that raided the lodging found a pair of pistols and two loaded 30-round magazines when the person of interest was detained, as was reported.
Those Hurt
Of the nine hurt, a single scholar was allowed to go home, said the university president, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in serious yet stable state, and another was critically ill, police said on Sunday.
A private school, a private K-12 school in North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.
Further Tributes
Tributes were paid to Cook at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only during her upbringing... but at Brown she was an incredible light in that specific location as well.”
The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the organization. “Ella was known for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she served her chapter and peers,” he said.
The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by Umurzokov’s death in a tribute. “Our profound condolences go out to the Umurzokov family, companions, and fellow students and mourn the loss of his promising future.”
Wider Picture
The weekend's murders at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US university with about 7,300 undergraduate and postgraduate students, took place amid one of at least 392 shooting incidents documented across the United States so far in this year, according to records. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
