Step Aside, Rupert Murdoch: Is Lord Rothermere Poised to Be Britain's Most Powerful Media Mogul?
Biding twenty years for another chance to secure a prized business purchase is a luxury not afforded to many executives. The Rothermere family, though, takes a more patient stance to timing.
Whereas most business boards create short-term strategies, the Rothermeres, having built a formidable media conglomerate over over one hundred years, are used to planning in terms of generations.
A Much-Anticipated Opportunity
It was in the year 2004 that Jonathan Harold Esmond Vere Harmsworth, the distinguished owner of the Daily Mail, was unsuccessful in his attempt to acquire the Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph.
In his view, the setback pleased Rupert Murdoch because it would have established a stable of conservative newspapers powerful enough to challenge the “distinct political influence” of his publications.
The softly spoken Rothermere, however, was able to adopt a patient strategy. The Telegraph titles were again put up for sale in 2023. From that point, two prospective owners have entered and exited, both after internal Telegraph revolts over their suitability. Rothermere has now swooped.
Family Legacy
In the process, the 57-year-old has reinforced his dynastic passion with UK press, after his forebears acquired, disposed of, and merged some of the biggest titles of their era.
“Lord Rothermere has got a business head, but he’s not sharply business minded,” stated Alex DeGroote. “It may sound sentimental, but his dedication to journalism is authentic.” I suspect internally, they’ve wanted to unite media businesses that serve centre-right audiences for decades.”
Significant challenges persist before the hereditary peer’s corporate entity can secure the titles. In addition to regulatory and diversity issues, Telegraph insiders are asking how he will stump up the £500m valuation. Nevertheless, his aspirations of creating a right-leaning media giant have been rekindled.
Behind the Scenes
It was a bold bid for a proprietor who prides himself on remaining out of the public eye, frequently emphasizing his readiness to let the pugnacious opinions of the Daily Mail differ from his own moderate, Europhile stance.
With the Rothermeres, though, media acquisitions are a dynastic tradition. An image of Alfred Harmsworth, his great-great-uncle who established the Daily Mail in 1896, adorns Rothermere’s office. One of his earliest memories was of his father, Vere, taking him to the hot-metal newspaper presses.
Journalistic Roots
In his youth would be involved in conversations about the difficult start for the Mail on Sunday in 1982. He remembers the pressure of the intense competition in 1987 between the London Daily News and his family’s Evening Standard, which he eventually divested.
Rothermere himself flirted with journalism, working as a editorial staffer on the Sunday Mail in Scotland, before focusing on the commercial operations of his family’s group. When his father died in 1998, Rothermere is said to have had a brief period upon returning home from the hospital before company calls began, in effect starting his chairing of DMGT, at thirty years old.
Business Direction
He has previously divested profitable parts of the business to refocus on the Mail and additional press holdings. The Telegraph bid is the latest sign of his eagerness to consolidate the family’s media stronghold. “This is a 20-year plus target acquisition,” commented a ex-staffer. “He doesn’t want the Mail as the only newspaper asset he leaves for his son Vere.”
Rothermere’s decision to take DMGT private in 2021 has also facilitated the acquisition attempt. “I don’t have to justify myself to anybody,” he remarked soon after the decision.
Editorial Independence
Intervening to change the Telegraph’s editorial line would be out of character. An ex-editor informed that both he and his predecessor interfered editorially.
“That is the main reason why I turned down very enticing offers to edit the Times and the Telegraph,” he said. “Frankly, I simply didn’t believe that other proprietors would give me that freedom. It’s difficult to overstate how valuable that freedom is to an editor.”
He continued, “Fleet Street is littered with the corpses of sacked editors who, amid crashing circulations, tried to please their proprietors rather than their readers. The Rothermeres have always understood that. It’s a sacred principle for them that editors are given total editorial autonomy, with the brutally clear understanding that they are dismissed if they produce poor papers.”
Regulatory Scrutiny
With British politics seemingly sliding to the right, there are predictable apprehensions about uniting the Mail and Telegraph at a juncture when each have been boosting reporting of a right-wing political movement.
Several progressive figures believe the Mail’s combative tone has become more pronounced in recent times, pointing to its championing of talking points advocated by Farage on migration and the “progressive” agenda. Others argue the Telegraph has experienced an even more radical shift, often running far-right opinion pieces that exceed those of the Mail.
Funding Uncertainties
There are numerous questions about how an individual possessing Rothermere’s resources has the funds. Most media analysts believe that a more realistic price tag for the titles is in the range of £350m, but Rothermere is willing to pay a higher price.
DMGT does not have a ready £500m, the price reportedly demanded by the existing owners as they seek to recover the debt that secured ownership of the titles two years ago.
Long-Term Outlook
Rothermere has promised to keep the Telegraph and Mail titles editorially separate, regarding them as serving distinct readerships – broadsheet and mid-market. However, there are apprehensions inside both titles over cuts and the longer-term plans, given the state of the newspaper industry.
Again, the family has demonstrated a willingness to take drastic action when required. In the past was attempting to save an ailing Daily Mail in 1971, he merged it with the Daily Sketch, brutally sacking hundreds of journalists in the aftermath.
Regulatory Hurdles
The culture secretary has asked that DMGT and the current owners present the proposed deal to the government within three weeks, but the outstanding issues will mean the saga continues well into next year.
“A company that owns the Mail and the Telegraph would have the scale to give both papers a better chance of surviving,” noted a former editor. “But, even then, such a company would be a pygmy compared to the giant internet platforms and the BBC from whom most people today get their news.”
His eldest son, thirty-one, Rothermere’s eldest son, is already being groomed to take control of the family empire, occupying a senior role in DMGT’s media business. If his responsibilities will include control of the Telegraph is the subsequent phase in the family's press narrative.
