The Details Known Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have stated the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the moments before the shooting, stating they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
