Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in shaping sculptural silhouettes made him a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose legacy on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
