The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several intriguing future games, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a young woman harboring several personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Inside her exist four separate souls, each with their own fears and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, while other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.
A World of Personal Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger something primal within us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The central mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms where their necks are. Flowers are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player have deduced a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
