The co-founders behind the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner Unilever prevented the launch for an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.

Ben Cohen, who co-founded the business with his partner, disclosed how he plans to personally create this new product within an individual collection highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.

Longstanding Conflict Between Founders and Parent Company

This latest announcement deepens the ongoing conflict between the world-famous dessert company and Unilever, the British consumer goods corporation which has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.

The co-founders maintain that the parent company along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company from "maintaining its activist principles".

Watermelon Sorbet becoming a Symbol of Solidarity

Mr. Cohen announced via social media that he is creating an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas for the product's name plus additional components.

“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder stated in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”

This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its colors, that mirror the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Previous Activism plus Recent Developments

In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever selling their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.

This upcoming product line is being created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company that was first established in 2016 for endorsing former political contender Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".

Leadership Changes plus Upcoming Plans

Mr. Cohen stated that he plans to develop additional frozen dessert varieties that address concerns which the company was prevented from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.

The announcement comes after partner Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, following decades of involvement, mentioning concerns regarding how the company's autonomy had been compromised after corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.

At that time, Mr. Cohen stated how “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."

"My heart leads me to keep working inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that the company can actualise its ethical purpose, the values which established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
