The network's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often defined by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this endearing family navigate their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to help comedy break out of its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
