Those A$150 Million Men Evolving into a Human Highlight Reel
This year's National Basketball Association campaign tips off now, marking the initial occasion in a decade that Aussie two most prominent basketball stars – Ben Simmons and Patty Mills – are without a roster spot.
This change indicates a changing of the guard, as Australian guard pair Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels step up as key starters for playoff aspirants, with recently signed nine-figure contracts making them some of Australia’s top athletic earners.
But they are not alone. Fourteen Australians are expected to play for playing time around the league, ranging from experienced big men Jock Landale and Duop Reath, emerging wings in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to promising rookies like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
Josh Giddey Aiming to Show His Worth
After lengthy discussions with the Chicago Bulls, Giddey ultimately signed his rookie extension worth US$100 million ($153m) over four years recently. It's a major deal for the Melburnian, but in NBA terms it is affordable for Giddey’s position and profile as a lead playmaker. Hesitation for Chicago’s front office to pay top dollar means the 23-year-old enters this year with much to prove.
After being moved by Oklahoma City at the start of last campaign, he watched as his old team stormed to the NBA championship in his absence. As the Chicago aim to make the playoffs in the weaker East, he will need to demonstrate his shooting and defence are elite-level or else he may slide towards the league's outskirts.
Dyson Daniels Eyes Another Step
Daniels agreed to the same deal as his counterpart recently, and after his most-improved player award last year, the Hawks guard’s trajectory has taken off in the city following his exit from the Pelicans. He is now praised as one of the NBA's best perimeter defenders, and topped the league in takeaways with three per game – more than one whole steal per game higher than the total of second place.
Playing next to dynamic Trae Young in Atlanta, the 22-year-old can be successful this season as a playmaking option and defensive stopper as long as the team make the playoffs. But if he can elevate his long-range game, which was subpar last year, and keep develop his distribution and driving, Daniels could become one of the league’s most versatile talents.
Johnny Furphy A Dunking Sensation
Pacers forward the rookie has burst onto the scene as a crowd favorite in Indiana following a succession of highlight-reel dunks in pre-season. His acrobatics prompted NBA personality Pat Beverley to label him as the “best white dunker we’ve seen in a long time”, and an opportunity to the All-Star dunk contest could be on the table.
After logging just eight minutes per game over 50 games in his debut season, the ex- college player is in the running for a Indiana rotation that might lean towards youth following injury to star playmaker Tyrese Haliburton.
Tyrese Proctor An Outside Shot
Guard the Sydney native fell in the June draft down to the 49th pick, where Eastern Conference contenders Cleveland selected him. The Cavaliers are favourites to reach the NBA finals from the East, so it would be unusual for a first-year player taken in the late picks to see significant court time. But the Australian has seen minutes in exhibition play, and his NBA-ready shot offers him a chance to make an impact.
Playing Time Squeeze Looms for Experienced Group
Seasoned centre Jock Landale has a opportunity to secure the starting centre position in the Grizzlies given highly-touted Zach Edey will miss the start of the campaign after a surgical procedure.
In Portland, Duop Reath is the veteran backup to youthful big men Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could see regular action if the Blazers become in the hunt. His teammate Matisse Thybulle is expected to be used as a defensive specialist in a reserve role.
In Charlotte, Josh Green's summer shoulder surgery has resulted in him without a timeline to come back. The 24-year-old still has a contract for the upcoming year, but won’t want to give his colleagues at the developing Charlotte an excessive advantage. And a physical issue has already slowed Dante Exum, who has a knee problem and has been absent for key exhibition opportunities in Dallas.
Aussie Hoopers On the Fringe
Then there are those who are not expected to see a lot of, if any, court time this year. Veteran Joe Ingles is back in Minnesota, but seems to be little more than a mentor keeping Anthony Edwards in check.
Rocco Zikarsky is expected to be nurtured by the Wolves through their G-League team. Other first-year players Lachlan Olbrich in Chicago and Alex Toohey for the Warriors are also in the development pipeline, while the experienced Luke Travers will be aiming to earn playing time alongside Proctor for the Cavs.
Ben Simmons and Patty Mills Fish for a Deal
Should anyone question Mills was set to retire, he answered them with a workout video posted on his social media recently, demonstrating the veteran remains sharp and determined on landing another league deal.
Simmons' intentions is uncertain after an off-season in his homeland, angling and playing with a football. Even though he took to Instagram last month to deny rumors he was done, the 29-year-old – an elite player as recently as 2021 – has yet to surface.
