The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors from the post-war period.

But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core platform, was not quick to announce he would live there right away following his victory in November.

"This decision came down to keeping my family safe and the imperative to directing all of my focus on carrying out the agenda for affordability voters voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.

Leaving Astoria

His home was in Astoria, Queens, an area known for its diverse immigrant communities and culinary diversity.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the best of New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, the community will forever remain a part of me and the work I do," he added.

Political Debate

During his campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.

Yet his rivals, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing although he is from a well-known family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a place for public city functions, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.

A Stately Residence

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment far removed from his modest Astoria apartment.

With its butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the historically styled mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's original era.

The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, which means the city sets limits on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses outpaces what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
